A model of host response to a multi-stage pathogen.

We model the immune surveillance of a pathogen which passes through n immunologically distinct stages. The biological parameters of this system induce a partial order on the stages, and this, in turn, determines which stages will be subject to immune regulation. This corresponds to the system's unique asymptotically stable fixed point.

Utilization of a silkworm model for understanding host-pathogen interactions

Studies of the interactions between humans and pathogenic microorganisms require adequate representative animal infection models. Further, the availability of invertebrate models overcomes the ethical and financial issues of studying vertebrate materials. Insects have an innate immune system that is conserved in mammals. The recent utilization of silkworms as an animal infection model led to th...

investigating the feasibility of a proposed model for geometric design of deployable arch structures

deployable scissor type structures are composed of the so-called scissor-like elements (sles), which are connected to each other at an intermediate point through a pivotal connection and allow them to be folded into a compact bundle for storage or transport. several sles are connected to each other in order to form units with regular polygonal plan views. the sides and radii of the polygons are...

Mean-field approximation to a spatial host-pathogen model.

We study the mean-field approximation to a simple spatial host-pathogen model that has been shown to display interesting evolutionary properties. We show that previous derivations of the mean-field equations for this model are actually only low-density approximations to the true mean-field limit. We derive the correct equations and the corresponding equations including pair correlations. The pr...

Fish monocytes as a model for mycobacterial host-pathogen interactions.

Mycobacterium marinum, a relatively rapid-growing fish and human pathogen, has become an important model for the investigation of mycobacterial pathogenesis. M. marinum is closely related to the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex and causes a disease in fish and amphibians with pathology similar to tuberculosis. We have developed an in vitro model for the study of M. marinum virulence mechanism...
